Mercyful Fate / Black Sabbath
Mercyful Fate
Voted in 1984 to be the best thing to happen to Metal since Led Zeppelin, Mercyful Fate have influenced lots of bands to go against the grain and play music that the minority want to hear. Lead singer King Diamond started off in a band called Black Rose when he met guitarist Hank Sherman, they quickley became friends and they formed a band with other members of Shermans band The Brats. They went to work together on their first album as Mercyful Fate, and produced Melissia. An album that shocked and at the same time enthralled anyone who listend to it. Their openly Satanic lyrics and appearence was an obvious area of criticism but they stuck at it and gained an imense amount of suppot from the underground metal scene. They were only around for 3 years but in that time they produced three brilliant albums, one of them being Don't Break the Oath which is Dani Filths favourite albums and has influenced lots of his work. King Diamond went on to become a very good sols artist and the rest of the band have fallen into oblivian (sorry guys.)

Black Sabbath
The chances are that if you are listening to Heavy Metal at this moment then the band was probibly influenced by Black Sabbath. They have had a massive impact on the Metal scene and every band that I listen to has something to thank them for. Metallica love them, Iron Maiden love them, and nearlly every metal band does. Fronted by Ozzy Osbourne (famous for biting the head off a dove when trying to get a record deal) the band became an instant success with their first album Black Sabbath. No-one had heard anything like it, distorted guitar riffs mixed with deep bass riffs and Ozzy's distinctive voice made them a band to be worshiped. They have had loads of best selling albums and simply hundreds of songs released, all of which carry the same theme, 'the meaning of life'. In 1985 Ozzy left the band to go in search of a solo career (actually he was kicked out because he became a piss head.) The band had a reunion in 1992 and there was talk of new material, but nothings happened yet.
